On Dec. 21, 1998 Randy Edsall became the 27th head coach in University of Connecticut football history. At UConn, Edsall has overseen the program's move from the NCAA's football Division I championship subdivision (Division I-AA) to its Division I Bowl subdivision (Division I-A) and the opening of the $91 million Rentschler Field in East Hartford in 2003 and the $48 million Burton Family Football Complex and Mark R. At UConn, Edsall has overseen the program's move from the NCAA's football Division I championship subdivision (Division I-AA) to its Division I Bowl subdivision (Division I-A) and the opening of the $91 million Rentschler Field in East Hartford in 2003 and the $48 million Burton Family Football Complex and Mark R. Shenkman Training Center in 2006. He also led the team to its first three Division I-A bowl game appearances and its first Big East championship. Born on Aug. 27, 1958, Edsall grew up in Glen Rock, Pa. where he was a three-year letter winner in football, basketball and baseball at Susquehanna High School in Glen Rock. Edsall went to Syracuse University, where he earned one varsity letter as a quarterback and a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1980. He added a master's degree in health and physical education in 1982 from Syracuse. After finishing his playing career at Syracuse, Edsall began his coaching career at the school in 1980 as a graduate assistant. From 1991-93, he coached defensive backs at Boston College under Tom Coughlin before coaching the same position from 1994-97 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, also under Coughlin. (Photo GETTY IMAGES)
