A small dog may have been a factor in a car crash Wednesday morning near Gig Harbor that killed one and injured two others.

Patricia M. Pierce, 47, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox that crossed over the center line and hit a 2000 Ford Expedition at 9:13 a.m. on State Route 302 near 124th Street, the Washington State Patrol reported. Pierce had a small dog in her lap while driving that may have caused her to drift into the other lane, police said.

Pierce and her dog were found dead at the scene, police reported. A 45-year-old woman driving the Expedition and her 7-year-old female passenger were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.

SR 302 was closed in both directions for some time.
