MADISON, S.D. - A pastor with Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison has confirmed to the Associated Press that a member of his congregation was killed in the shooting that left the community on edge.
Pastor Dirk Hagmaier says that 72-year-old Norman Johnson was an active member of the church. He says Johnson was a community volunteer without whom "many children would have gone hungry."
Johnson was killed Tuesday night at his home on Northwest 5th Street.
Johnson also was a retired Madison High School English teacher and track coach.
The church is planning a 7 p.m. gathering at the church on Harth Avenue. The Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison reports on its website that a memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Police are still searching for the shooter.
