STURGIS, S.D. - Fire crews from Sturgis and Fort Meade responded to the Dakota Mill and Grain elevator on Sturgis' Main Street this morning.
Sturgis Fire Chief Ron Koan says smoke was reported in one of the elevator's pits after a piece of machinery malfunctioned. Koan says there was a lot of smoke, but fire crews were able to avoid a fire.
Other than a damaged belt and a bearing, there was no other damage reported.
Crews closed Main Street in front of the elevator as a precaution, but it has since reopened. Fire crews were released from the scene around 9:50 a.m.
There were no injuries reported.
